I finally finished! I’ve been working on this project, what, 6 months on and off? Anyway, here, have a TL;DR about why I did this the way I did.
For a looong time I’ve wanted to see what an official Station of Awakening for other characters would look like. (Nomura, can we see Kairi’s please?) Anyway, Riku’s my favorite character of course, so I decided to make one and try to make it as close to what Nomura would do as I could muster. And, being one to overthink things, made it very conceptual. I also picked and chose amongst aspects of all the windows since the details vary greatly, especially with the original 4.
In my headcanon Riku broke his own window to get at the seemingly-more-powerful darkness below it, using the shield he chose to smash it. His Dive to Heart dream was the first step in the Keyblade passing him over, and breaking it left his heart more vulnerable to the temptations darkness brought. It thus left a mark on his window in the form of “Ansem.” (Since he broke the glass and not the platform, his heart wasn’t collapsing like Ven’s.) It took years to repair it, resulting in the version seen here. (In his original window his pose mirrored Sora.)
His window is upside-down from the others. Given that his journey turned views about darkness as well as Keyblade inheritance (briefly) upside-down, it was fitting.
Lastly, the bottom line for Riku is that he protects. It’s the reason he wanted power. As such, he’s seen guarding his friends and allies. However, I also designed it with KH3D in mind where he protects his best friend, and so I wanted to design Riku’s window around Sora’s. It… Sorta worked. I had to keep in mind that his pose couldn’t be too tense since he’s supposed to be asleep, but also struggled with how large Sora was on his window and that drawing Riku in proportion wasn’t as doable as I’d like. At least not with my skill level. O~o
Portrait placement: Sora’s the center of the story and basically EVERYONE’S life. Easy. Kairi was the driving force for the boys in KH1, and as such should be close to his heart. Xion as an ally touched Riku, but was sadly forgotten, memories now underfoot. Namine works off to the sidelines, as does Mickey, the former teaching him to accept his own darkness and the latter acting as a mentor. Terra influenced Riku’s life from an early age, but he had to keep that story hidden. No really, I thought this all out.
Incidentally I’ve never been more glad I made that small Way to the Dawn for my Riku figure mod. Also? Mickey is HARD to draw right. Thank God for Photoshop to nudge things. Most importantly, here’s the original template by ThePurpleUnderlord I modified and then art-ed on. I only had to modify a couple things, and it’s the most accurate I’ve found to date. Thank you for saving me time!
If you read all this, you’re awesome. Here, have a cookie and go tumble. :3
